Vision Restored: The Story of Maria
Maria lost her sight 20 years ago and had resigned herself to a life of darkness. Through LHRC's eye health program, she received a cataract surgery that changed everything.
Maria, a 65-year-old widow from rural Uganda, lived in darkness for two decades after developing cataracts. Unable to see, she couldn't work her small garden or care for her grandchildren properly. A LHRC health worker visiting her village identified her condition and referred her for free surgical evaluation. On March 15th, 2023, Maria underwent cataract removal surgery. Days later, when the bandages came off, she could see again for the first time in 20 years. Today, Maria works her garden, attends church, and tells everyone in her village about the importance of eye health screening.
